JCF November Film:

Our November film could be described as a classic “road trip” film—except that the buddies aren’t friends. One is a black concert pianist on a tour to the Deep South in 1962. The other is an Italian- American bouncer hired as his driver/bodyguard. It’s based on a true story. The title refers to the essential item for such a trip, The Negro Motorist Green- Book. Published from 1936 through 1966, it was a guide to places that offered safe accommodation for black travelers. When white business owners could and did refuse service and some towns were unsafe after dark, it was indispensable. Green Book stars Viggo Mortensen and Mahershala Ali. It received an Academy Award as Best Picture, and Ali won as Best Supporting Actor. It’s rated PG-13. We’ll see it on Sunday, November 24, at 2:00 PM.
